Ways to make money while in esthetician school
When I look back on my time at esthetician school, I remember just trying to make it through. I wanted my time there to end as quickly as possible. I went to Aveda Institute full-time, so I was there for 8+ hours and could not have a job while in school. However, there were so many opportunities I could have explored during that time that I had no idea about.
Some of the opportunities include, becoming a VA, an influence, skin consultations, and starting a blog. Let’s discuss the benefits of becoming an influencer.
If you have decided to go solo straight out of school, social media is a must. Not only will you get your name out there, but you can start selling products and kits online. The hardest part of going solo is getting clients to trust you. I would pick a social platform where I could put out the information I was learning in school. You must give to receive. Once clients see you as a “skin guru” that drops knowledge bombs on skincare, you will be there go to esthetician. So now that you have built trust, start selling! I recommend using Glymed Plus since it’s a drop-shipping store for estheticians. You will receive 40% of all sells and if use my referral link and account code (0027141) you can receive 20,000 Regen Reward points (over $150 value). “What if I want to receive a higher profit margin?” Let’s talk becoming a VA.
If you’re not familiar with the term VA it is an acronym for virtual assistant and being one for a spa, can get your foot in the door. You can do cold emails to local spas, a lot of employers prefer there remote employees to still be local to the area to pick-up equipment and attend staff meetings. I would reach out to medspa’s since the pay will be higher and they are likely to pay up to $25 hourly or more depending on your rates. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, you could absolutely land your dream position. “VA is nice, but I want to do something closely related to skin”. Let’s talk virtual skin consultations.
Virtual skin consultations are a way to connect with people from different parts of the world and assess their skin. You simply ask a series of questions, ask for pictures of their skin concerns, and recommend products/treatments. Skin consultations are a great way to retain the knowledge you learn in school, give you the confidence to make sales, and challenge you to advance your knowledge. Virtual consultations can be done through social media or through your own personal website using a platform like zoom. You will need to decide if you will charge for you skin consults, just for the products you sell, or do both. If you’re introvert like myself, I have another recommendation called digital products.
Digital products provide a passive income stream and lets you get creative. When making a digital product you need to think of a problem and create a solution. For example there will always be another esthetician coming after you, make your study notes into an ebook and make a profit. You can sell digital products on Etsy or make your own digital store front. While digital products can be very time consuming to make, I would create something I already use everyday. Like a digital journal or calendar. There are a ton of videos on how to create digital products so I won’t bore you with details.
There are so many ways to make extra income while in school that don’t need to be skincare related. Such as focus groups, a YouTube channel documenting your journey, and creating a blog like this one. Whatever you do have fun and keep going!.
