Overcoming Obstacles: My Journey to Becoming an Esthetician
I failed my esthetician written exam!
As a spa coordinator, I’ve been earning a pretty decent income, but lately, my boss has been starting to annoy me. With no openings for an esthetician and the current esthetician showing no signs of quitting, my drive to pursue my esthetician license became more urgent. Not getting my license was never an option; now, I found the motivation to get it sooner rather than later. So, let the studying begin!
The Written Exam
The written exam primarily tests your knowledge of TDLR laws, skin diseases, and a random makeup question. For the TDLR section, all you need is the cosmetology book that is sent to you in the mail. So you’re wondering how I failed, as basic as it may sound this is the question that cost me my passing grade: What is Melanoma? Considering, I only needed one more right answer to pass. I knew if I would have originally trusted my gut on the answer for this question, I would have passed the first time.
Instead of sharing specific questions and answers—which could vary each time—I want to emphasize the importance of believing in yourself. You know the material! You’ve read your TDLR book from cover to cover, studied Quizlets, and reviewed your esthetician textbook hundreds of times. Trust your instincts and don’t overthink. Pro tip: Remember, you will take your picture there for your temporary license, so be sure to put on some mascara!
My Testimony
When I walked out of the testing center, tears rolled down my face as I felt like the biggest failure. I knew that I had over-thought the questions as my heart hit the floor and my dreams shattered. I got in my parents car, sobbing. They took me to my favorites pasta place to cheer me up. On the drive there, GOD reminded me there was a client who came in and gave me $200 even though I did not preform his service. I used that same money to retake my test and that time I passed it! That man was truly my “ram in the bush.” Not only did I get a free chance to retake the test, but I also received a second opportunity to pursue my dreams.
It doesn’t matter the score you make or how many times it takes. You were meant to be an esthetician with the hands to transform skin. Take a deep breath, focus on your why and I will see you on the other side.
My journey to becoming an esthetician has been filled with challenges, but it has also provided me with valuable lessons about perseverance and self-belief. Every setback is an opportunity for growth, and I learned that it’s essential to trust in your preparation and instincts. If you’re considering pursuing your esthetician license or facing setbacks in your career, remember that your passion can ignite a path forward. Embrace your journey, and don’t let temporary failures deter you from your ultimate goals. You were meant to be an esthetician with the hands to transform skin!
If you’re are about to pass your exam, I want to be the first to say this:
Congratulations on becoming a Licensed Esthetician! Welcome to the SkinLecture!
