Where it all began
So the time came where I needed to decide what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I remember thinking I hate working, I don’t want to work, but I’ve got to do something to make money. What is something I already do every day that I enjoy?
Let’s think about my routine. The first thing I did in the morning was skincare and hygiene. Let’s be a dermatologist! (yes, I jumped the gun that quickly) I looked into dermatology and realized it required 12 years of school, over $100,000, and it focused on skin diseases, not skin care. As I searched Google for more info on dermatology; I realized, that wasn’t going to happen. As I kept scrolling “become an esthetician” hit my line of sight. What’s an esthetician?
I had no idea what an esthetician was, but after a little research and time at Youtube University. I realized It was my dream career. Now it was time for me to find my school. Which is where we begin. I’ll tell you where I went, why I didn’t choose the other schools, and where you should go.
Let’ start with the 3 Ivy leagues
Ogle was my 1st stop. I hated it. The school didn’t align with the glamour I believed to be associated with estheticians. Nothing really stood out, and I felt like I was in a cubicle for aestheticians. They used Dermalogica products and provided treatments/used modalities that could get your foot in the door. Knowing skills like microdermabrasion and chemical peels; play a huge role in getting hired fresh out of school at a results driven spa. I didn’t realize the importance of this and went to the next school.

Next was Aveda Institute, my alumni. I walked into Aveda and it was beautiful! My mom and I looked at each other and said “this is it”. Not only was I impressed by the look of the place, but also their philosophy. Their products were more natural, they didn’t use chemical peels, or modalities. This played a huge role on which places would hire me as a newly licensed esthetician. I was able to easily get jobs in massage spas, and spas that were holistic-based. My time at Aveda was an experience and was a brief time in my aesthetic career. We will discuss this time later, but onto the next school.

Let’s talk about Paul Mitchell, when I did research on the school it reminded me of Ogle. I never went to visit this school since I decided on Aveda. Though Aveda was a beautiful school. If I could do it all over again I wouldn’t have even visited the “Ivy Leagues.”

“Your school does not matter get your license and after that the real learning begins”. That right there is a key to finding the perfect school. Attend a school near your home, that’s affordable, and that align with your values as an aesthetician.
If your plan is to go into a medspa or a results-driven spa. You want to pick a school similar to Ogle or Paul Mitchel. If you want to work at a spa that is holistic go for a school like Aveda. I discuss a little more about this topic in my free ebook “ how to land your first esthetician job”
Now do some tours, compare prices, and find your aesthetician school. My next blog post will be on surviving aesthetician school. See you there!
